What meditation benefits are backed by science is a question I get asked frequently. Mostly by left-side brainers(analytical-minded).😄
Overall, when it comes to the topic of having a meditative practice, the benefits are undeniable.
Without a doubt, meditation is one of the most underrated exercises out there. You know, you might think that sitting down and literally doing nothing can’t be useful, right? But you’d be surprised!
Let’s go over 5 awesome benefits of meditation that scientist have confirmed (Resources links in each segment of this post).
5 Awesome Meditation Benefits Backed By Science
1Drastically Reduced Stress
Meditation does reduce stress!
Studies, including one by none other than the Harvard Medical School, have repeatedly shown a strong, statistically significant correlation between having a meditation practice and reduced stress levels. Among the numerous benefits of meditation, this is one of the most useful!
Mindfulness meditation (and other mindfulness practices) often reduces symptoms of anxiety or depression. Moreover, stress is strongly linked to these two.
Another publication from the Harvard Medical School confirms that a regular meditative practice can help your brain better manage stress and anxiety that can trigger depressive episodes.
Think about it; mindfulness helps you become aware of your thoughts.
On the other hand, anxiety, particularly, is caused when confusion occurs between thoughts and reality… Well, mindfulness is all about clarity between thoughts and reality!
Meditation drastically relieves stress, and that’s an amazing benefit from a simple exercise!

2Improved Focus
Research shows that having a brief Mindfulness Meditation Practice improves attention span in practitioners.
And while science can get into too many jargons to explain the reasons why, my goal is to keep it simple.
So, in layman’s terms, when you meditate, you relax! And when you relax, you reduce your stress levels.
A secondary yet welcomed side benefit of reduced stress is that more mental energy is freed up.
You see, when you’re not controlled by thoughts of worry, anxiety, or stress, more mental resources are freed up for other mental activities, i.e., focus, concentration, creativity. Etc.
It’s AMAZING how much of an impact mindfulness has on focus levels.
You almost wouldn’t believe it…
But it makes perfect sense! Being mindful means being aware of yourself.
In other words, being in a state of mindfulness is being in a state of surrender to the divine presence and being at peace with your surrounding.
It might sound mystical, but that’s what’s going on when you’re mindful. You are becoming one with The Source, Spirit, God, The Universe, and you’re equally at peace with yourself!
So, in short, being mindful positively impacts your ability to enter states of flow, allowing you to focus more.
3Increased Patience
If meditation is good for anything, it’s developing patience.
There’s nothing more iconic about meditating than that? I mean, the practice itself requires you to sit patiently and be present (AKA try not to think). Can you imagine the amount of patience you need for that alone?
But kidding aside, it’s true; meditation cultivates patience like nothing else. Well, that’s might not be entirely true for everyone, but the big picture here is that meditation increases self-awareness.
And with increased self-awareness, you can cultivate more patience. And it gets better!
Gaining tolerance & patience through meditation is one of the benefits that’s even backed by research.
When your emotional reactions and triggers are being tamed through a meditative practice, you start to tap into the positive energy of acceptance and tolerance. To understand this fully, please watch this training on the topic of the scale of consciousness and the power of vibration.
So the next time you find yourself in a situation where you seem to be running out of patience, give yourself a 5-minute break and meditate. Seriously, you won’t regret it!

4Empowered Mood and Emotional Wellness
This one benefit I can speak to the most as I struggled from PTSD flashbacks and anxiety attacks.
Research backs the finding that a regular meditation practice benefits practitioner’s overall mood and mental wellness.
It’s quite shocking to me how many people are willing to take drugs (some with very questionable side effects), yet they would either:
- Not give meditation a solid try,
- Or give up very soon before seeing the benefits.
I have been meditating for well over 10+ years, averaging about 20-35 minutes a day. Started small, but now I am here😁
And having both learned how to meditate and taught it to others who are new to the practice, I can tell you from first-hand experience that meditation works.
It’s really important to realize that the benefits of meditation are EPIC!
Whenever I feel an anxiety episode or PTSD flashback comes up, I immediately excuse myself and go somewhere private (if possible) and ground my mind with meditation.
If privacy is an issue, I simply close my eyes and put my hand on my heart, and I remind myself that this is OK.
I coach my brain and tell it that I am safe and loved. And I continue to meditate over these thoughts till I calm down. It takes practice, but it’s totally worth it, I promise.
5Improved Natural Rhythm and Sleep Cycles
Yes! Meditation benefits both your sleep cycles and circadian rhythm.
It’s unbelievable! Just when you thought meditation couldn’t get any better…
According to a paper by the Department of Neurophysiology at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Bangalore, India, meditation has a considerable impact on regulating human sleep cycles and natural rhythms.
The study details that “Meditation, with its global effects on body and brain functions, helps to establish a body and mind harmony.”
Incredible! Nothing shouts “mindfulness!” louder than inner “mind” and outer “body” harmony.
Besides, meditation benefits the human body with deep relaxation levels comparable to what you undergo during regular sleep periods.
So when you’re meditating while you’re awake, you’re depositing good points in your calm and relaxation bank account that’ll aid you when you sleep. This is a win-win in my book!
By now, you’re probably sold on the idea that meditation provides loads of physical and psychological health benefits.
Thankfully, getting the meditation benefits you seek doesn’t require any difficult or complicated setup. Simply sit down, focus on your breathing, and suddenly… You’re meditating!
And if you’re new to the practice or you’d like to supercharge your existing practice, then here’s a guided meditative session that I created to help with that. (It’s 100% FREE).
